Options to integrate your BlackBerry into your Business

Options to integrate your BlackBerry into your Business

In a previous post I explained 5 Reasons your employees need a Blackberry!. This time I will give you some ways to accomplish this.

Depending on your environment I would recommend you use BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). Now to use a BES server you will need to have an email server such as MS Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise. If you do not have an email server and you just have a POP/IMAP account you cannot use BES. You have other options that will be discussed below.

Windows 7 Upgrade  E-mail
Windows 7

I just performed our first Windows 7 Upgrade.

I must admit that I was a bit hesitant to upgrade one of my users to Windows 7 so early after its release. I usually try to wait a minimum of six months. But we discussed it and he was a willing guinea pig. It helped my confidence a little bit that this particular user was very computer literate and I wouldn’t have to hold his hand after install.

First step was to make sure that I had all of this users data backed up on the server and had all necessary software and licenses available for a clean install just in case things went horribly wrong.

Project Management- Understanding the Timeline and Costs!  E-mail
Project Management Timeline and Costs

One thing I have seen over the years is the constant lack of understanding of the project timeline and its effect on the budget. Over and over again I have seen CEO's, COO's, CFO's, CIO's and an array of top level executives be penny wise and dollar stupid. They only focus on the number right in front of them and not the combined costs of the delay.

For an example I am going to use a situation that was taught to me by a close friend. This was about ten years ago and I was fairly new to the whole project management thing and this really turned on the light bulb above my head, I hope it does the same for you. Let's say you are the project manager that is in charge of building a bridge. Your daily operating costs are in the area of $14 million. You have 250 workers, cranes, barges, tugboats and countless other equipment. Nearing the half way point one of your foreman informs you that they are missing a vital part. This part connects one piece of the bridge to another and without it they cannot progress any further. The cost of this part is $16,000 but the supplier is on the opposite coast. The supplier says that they can overnight it to you at a cost of $1 million. Standard delivery is 3 days @ $50,000. What do you do?

Wordpress to Drupal Migration/Conversion  E-mail

A client of ours, http://thegarv.com , is a very popular Mixed Martial Website that sees about 50,000 unique visitors a month ( as of 8/09)and about 2500 posts. The site started years back as a joomla site then at some point was moved to wordpress. It had been bastardized so many times that the code was so screwed up that Google and the other search engines were not indexing the Meta information.

Anyway we decided to scrap wordpress and move over to a new CMS (Content Management System. The new CMS would be chosen by which platform would import easiest. After many searches we decided that Drupal offered the best option.

The first option we tried was wp2drupal. Well it didnt go very well. Many people had gotten this to work but for us, it was a nightmare! After trying it many different days we decided to search for a new option.

We found a few scripts that didnt directlt integrate to Drupal, they would extract bits of info from the database them we would have to import them into ours. Not something that was very desirable to us.

Things You Should Ask Your Web Design & Web Development Company

If you ask the following questions it should put you in a better situation.

1. What platforms do they use?

There are many freely available CMS (Content Management Systems) platforms to use these days. There is Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal, and many others. If a company tries to get you to pay for their proprietary CMS you should steer clear! If they use a home grown solution then you are locked into using them for the most part. If they use one of the ones I mention above then there are tons of people out there that can help you out if need be. If you are looking for an ecommerce solution sometimes homegrown solutions are the best, depending on the scope of the project.
